Skoda boosts electric vehicle production with a new battery hall at Mlada Boleslav, featuring efficient LFP packs for the Elroq 50 and upcoming Epiq crossover.
Skoda Launches Advanced Battery Assembly Hall at Mlada Boleslav Plant
Skoda has enhanced its electric vehicle production by inaugurating a new battery assembly hall at its main plant in Mlada Boleslav, Czech Republic. This €205 million investment establishes Skoda as the largest battery-electric vehicle (BEV) battery manufacturer within the Volkswagen Group.
Boosted Capacity and Streamlined Production
The facility produces over 1,100 battery systems daily, with an annual capacity of up to 335,000 units. This translates to a finished battery system emerging from the line every 60 seconds, marking a considerable gain in production efficiency.
Equipped with 131 industrial robots, the mainly automated hall ensures precise, high-quality assembly. Spanning 55,000 square meters (592,015 square feet), it ranks among the largest battery production centers globally.
Innovation with Cell-to-Pack Technology
The hall employs cell-to-pack technology, eliminating the module phase by bonding cells directly into stacks. This innovation simplifies assembly and cuts production costs by 30% compared to existing MEB packs.
This approach uses standardized cells with lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) chemistry, which is more affordable and environmentally friendly than nickel-manganese-cobalt alternatives. LFP batteries avoid using cobalt or scarce nickel, addressing ethical and resource concerns.
LFP Batteries to Power Elroq 50 and Upcoming Epiq Crossover
Currently, the Skoda Elroq 50 is equipped with an LFP battery. Thanks to the new battery hall, LFP technology will be available across more models.
The forthcoming B-segment Epiq crossover will also feature LFP battery packs. It joins at least three other MEB+ electric vehicles debuting in 2026—the Cupra Raval, Volkswagen ID. Cross, and Volkswagen ID. Polo—all manufactured in Spain.
Skoda's new battery facility marks a major advancement in its electrification and sustainability strategy, positioning the brand to meet rising demand for electric vehicles with enhanced capacity and efficiency.
