Discover the new Skoda Kylaq, India's latest B-segment SUV with a 1.0L TSI engine, advanced safety, and modern design debuting November 6, 2024.
Skoda Kylaq Spied Ahead of November 6 Debut
The all-new Skoda Kylaq, the Czech brand’s second SUV tailored for the Indian market, was recently spotted testing at the Nürburgring. While it’s undergoing rigorous testing, this sporty SUV is not intended for track use.
Design and Features
Examining the rear bumper reveals a twist-beam axle, a cost-effective and easy-to-maintain alternative to multi-link suspensions. Built on the budget-friendly MQB A0 IN platform derived from Volkswagen's MQB A0, the Kylaq shares its foundation with the B-segment Skoda Slavia made for India.
The camouflaged prototype shows a compact rear overhang and a tall rear profile. The front end features a more pronounced overhang but maintains an upright stance, perfectly matching the relatively flat roofline. Small rear quarter windows and rear disc brakes on top trims are also expected.
Engine and Transmission
Power comes from Volkswagen Group's EA211-series 1.0 TSI turbocharged engine, delivering 85 kW (114 hp) and 178 Nm (131 lb-ft) of torque. Transmission options include a six-speed manual and a torque-converter automatic.
Unlike the larger 1.5 TSI variants in the Kushaq and Slavia, the Kylaq's smaller engine helps keep costs down. Thus, it won’t feature the dry-clutch DSG transmission available in higher-powered models.
Specifications
The Kylaq measures 3,995 mm (157.3 in) long with a 2,566 mm (101.0 in) wheelbase, making it noticeably more compact than the Kushaq, which is 4,221 mm (166.2 in) long with a 2,651 mm (104.4 in) wheelbase. Ground clearance is rated at 189 mm (7.4 in).
About the Name
"Kylaq" is derived from the Sanskrit word for "crystal." Skoda reports that the vehicle has undergone over 800,000 kilometers (nearly 500,000 miles) of testing exclusively in India.
This model is designed specifically for the Indian market, with no plans for a European or UK launch. It boasts over 25 active and passive safety features, including six airbags and traction control, positioning it as a strong competitor against the Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, and Tata Nexon.
Pricing is expected to start around 800,000 INR (approximately $9,510 USD), making it an attractive option in the B-segment crossover category.
