NASA Reveals Artemis II Crewed Moon Mission Launch Dates and Timeline to Liftoff

The wait is almost over for the Artemis II crewed moon mission, as NASA has announced its final steps towards a historic journey. The mission, which marks the first time humans will set foot on the moon since the 1960s, is expected to launch between January and April.

    Pre-Launch Preparations

NASA plans to conduct a wet dress rehearsal at the end of January, a crucial test that will simulate the rocket's ability to receive over 700,000 gallons of cryogenic propellants. If successful, the launch countdown will follow, and then the propellant will be removed from the rocket.

The closeout crew will also practice their operations by sealing the Artemis II crew inside the Orion spacecraft. The rehearsal will involve several runs to demonstrate the ability to hold, resume, and recycle the countdown to several different times in the terminal count.

    Launch Dates Calendar

According to NASA, there are one week of launch opportunities and three weeks with no such opportunities. The space agency says "up to four launch attempts may be attempted within the approximate week of opportunities that exist within a launch period."

The launch dates calendar is as follows:

    • Launch period: January 31 – February 14
    • Launch opportunities: February 6, 7, 8, 10, and 11
    • Launch period: February 28 – March 13
    • Launch opportunities: March 6, 7, 8, 9, 11
    • Launch period: March 27 – April 10
    • Launch opportunities: April 1, 3, 4, 5, 6

The Artemis II mission is a significant milestone in NASA's plans to return humans to the moon and eventually send them to Mars. The crewed mission will see four astronauts – Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen – embark on a ten-day trip around the moon.
