Skoda Superb Sleeper Edition Drag Races Porsche 911 Turbo S: Both Run 12-Second Quarters
In an unexpected showdown, Skoda UK transformed a Skoda Superb Estate 2.0 TSI 4x4 into the Sleeper Edition—a unique wagon delivering an impressive 477 metric horsepower.
A Tale of Two Turbos
The Sleeper Edition is equipped with a Garrett PowerMax turbocharger and NGK Racing spark plugs, while the Porsche 911 Turbo S (996 generation) employs a 3.6L six-cylinder boxer engine with twin turbos, producing 450 PS (444 hp) and 620 Nm (457 lb-ft) of torque.
The Superb's output is significantly boosted from the standard 280 PS tune, with peak torque now at 661 Nm (488 lb-ft) versus the original 350 Nm (258 lb-ft). The Turbo S pairs its power with a Tiptronic five-speed automatic transmission.
On the drag strip, Sam Maher-Loughnan recorded a 12.2-second quarter mile in the Porsche, while Mat Watson managed a close 12.4 seconds in the DSG-equipped Skoda wagon. Despite weighing more, the Superb also outperformed the Porsche in braking from 100 mph (161 km/h).
Key upgrades on the Superb include Goodridge Racing brake lines and KW coil-over dampers, whereas the Turbo S features standard composite ceramic brakes.
With over 1.6 million units produced, the Skoda Superb remains a popular model entering its fourth generation for the 2024 model year. The Porsche 911 boasts a rich history, crossing the one-million unit milestone in May 2017.
