Skoda to Withdraw from Chinese Market Following Sharp Sales Decline

Skoda ends its presence in China after 15,000 vehicle deliveries in 2025, citing growing competition and shifting market priorities.

Skoda to Withdraw from Chinese Market Following Sharp Sales Decline

After years of strong performance, Skoda China reported just 15,000 vehicle deliveries in 2025, leading the automaker to announce its exit from the Chinese market.

Understanding the Factors Behind the Move

The sales decline stems from multiple challenges. China's leading edge in battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) has sharply reduced demand for Skoda's internal combustion engine (ICE) models. Additionally, China's control over essential minerals for high-voltage batteries has limited Skoda's competitive options.

Moreover, Skoda's traditional strengths don't translate effectively in China, where the brand struggles to compete against strong local and international rivals. The Volkswagen Group, Skoda's parent company, is refocusing its efforts on more promising markets like India and the ASEAN region.

Sales Phase-Out and Current Lineup in China

Skoda plans to end its sales in China by mid-2026. In the market, Skoda operates through the SAIC-Volkswagen joint venture, offering models including a long-wheelbase Octavia, Superb, two Kodiaq variants, two Kamiq versions, and the Karoq.

Available engines span from 1.2-liter TSI and 1.5-liter MPI to 2.0-liter TSI units. Unique to China are the GT versions of the Kodiaq and the smaller Kamiq, featuring distinctive rooflines and rear designs.

Supporting Existing Owners and Future Directions

Even after withdrawal, after-sales service for existing Skoda drivers in China will continue, supported through synergies with other brands within the group to ensure vehicle maintenance.

Notably, Skoda remains Volkswagen Group's largest supplier of battery-electric vehicle battery systems, highlighting its importance in EV technology development.

Looking Ahead: New Markets and Production Highlights

Skoda is now prioritizing growth in more promising regions such as India and ASEAN. The brand's Mlada Boleslav factory in the Czech Republic plays a pivotal role for Volkswagen Group, with an annual capacity of 620,000 vehicles, 335,000 battery systems, 600,000 combustion engines, and 400,000 transmissions.
